Basic information about Medway

Medway is a local government district with borough status in Kent, England. It borders the unitary authority of Medway Towns and is historically part of Kent. The council's headquarters are located in Strood. The area has a population of approximately 168,000 (mid-2018 estimate) and is predominantly rural. It contains a number of market towns: Rainham, Rochester and Chatham form the "Three Towns" with a population of about 70,000; Strood and Gillingham are much smaller.
The area was once occupied by an ancient Celtic tribe, the Medway Britons, but became known as "Middle" (home) in Saxon times, hence "car_hire_medway". The river was a vital part of the network of waterways that aided the development of the boats that gave Chatham Dockyard its name. Rochester and Strood are constructed around chalk hills on opposite banks of the River Medway.
In Rochester, parts of the Roman city wall are still in evidence, and the city has many fine buildings, such as the Guildhall (today a museum), which was built in 1687 and is among the finest 17th-century civic buildings in Kent. the Corn Exchange, built-in 1698, originally the Butcher's Market; the small Tudor house of Watts Charity endowed by Sir Richard Watts to house "six poor travellers" for one night each; Satis House and Old Hall, both visited by Queen Elizabeth I, built-in 1573. In Medway, there are 82 scheduled ancient monuments, 832 Listed buildings, and 22 conservation areas.

Local Bus Services

Rail Services

The Medway towns lie on two routes of the national rail network. The North Kent Line (between Chatham and London Victoria/Charing Cross) was electrified under British Rail in the 1960s, with a semi-fast service to London stopping at Strood and Rochester.
The North Kent Line is now covered by Southeastern, with high-frequency services to London and major stations such as Ebbsfleet International and Dover Priory.

The main route through the Medway towns is the A2 road, which links London to Dover. The M2 motorway bypasses the towns to the north, while the M20 forms a junction with the A2 at nearby Stanford-le-Hope. The A289 road provides an alternative into the Medway towns, via its connection with the A2 at Faversham.
The A229 road is another alternative route into Chatham, from Maidstone. This provides a link to the M2 and the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone.

There is a half-hourly coach service to London that operates from Chatham Coachway.

The River Medway, which passes through the towns, provides a navigable route from The Thames to Tonbridge.

A small airport, known as Rochester Airport, operates from the banks of the River Medway. This is used for private aviation and scheduled flights to destinations such as the Isle of Man and Jersey.
