In 1109 King Henry I founded a priory in Hatfield and the famous Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket is thought to have been born there. A few years later in 1143, his father Geoffrey decided to build a marketplace so that local merchants could sell their goods outside London. This market still exists today as "The Walks" shopping centre.
During the 18th century, Hatfield saw considerable growth due to its location on one of England's most important coaching roads between London and Cambridge. In the 20th century, Hatfield became known for being the home of several important aircraft factories where Spitfire fighters were built.
