Basic information about Dunstable

Dunstable is a market town in Bedfordshire, England. It lies on the eastward tail spurs of the Chiltern Hills, about 23 miles (37 km) north of London. Its main street is lined with medieval burgage plots and many old timber-framed buildings. The town forms a C boundary to an urban area that spreads southwards into Central Bedfordshire, westwards to Milton Keynes and Northampton, eastwards across the county border into Hertfordshire and includes Luton Airport in its built-up area.
The geology of Dunstable - like much of the rest of Bedfordshire - consists mainly of hillslopes made up almost entirely of chalk excavated for cement manufacture; one quarry remains open as a rock park. The town lies at the edge of Dunstable & District industrial area which borders Luton to the south. The soil is a stony loam which, historically, has supported grassland agriculture. In the late 19th & early 20th centuries, it was also highly productive for fruit growing.
Dunstable's characteristic features include an almost complete lack of steep terrain and a stable boundary with its neighbouring town Luton from which roads radiate outwards into the wider Bedfordshire. The town is an example of a planned settlement that has grown organically, beginning with organised settlements on hilltops in Mesolithic times. Larger scale subsequent occupation led to the creation of medieval nucleated villages focused around fortified places such as churches or significant points in the landscape.
